Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, colleges, community organizations and student advocates are looking to boost on-campus civic engagement through voter registration and participation initiatives.
The 2020 election saw one of the highest young voter turnouts, according to Tufts University research. It estimated that about 50% of young people voted in 2020, which is 11 percentage points higher than what they saw in 2016.
Far fewer college students voted in 2022 than 2018. That may not mean turnout rates will stay low this year, but the data could provide a clue about how to promote student voting come November.
